Night Snake

Another vertical night panorama taken in the autumn Dolomites… What can you see in the sky? Stars, you’re right :) But let’s be more specific. Firstly, there is the Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405) close to the mountains, which is an emission/reflection nebula in the constellation Auriga, surrounding the bluish star AE Aurigae. There is also the open star cluster, the Pleiades or Seven Sisters (M45). The California Nebula (NGC 1499) is nicely visible – an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus. It is so named because it appears to resemble the outline of the US State of California in long exposure photographs.

Located in the Perseus Arm of the Galaxy, the Heart Nebula and the Soul Nebula (IC 1805 and IC 1848) are two bright nebulae in a region of the Galaxy where a lot of stars are forming. IC 1805 (the Heart Nebula) is also sometimes called the „Running Dog Nebula“ because it is said to resemble a running dog when viewed through a telescope.

Panorama compiled from total of 21 frames (12 exposures of stars in two rows, 9 exposures of landscape in the third and fourth row, 4-level focus bracketing).
