Aurora Breeze in Reine

Photographing the Northern Lights in Reine (Lofoten, Norway) has never been my favorite. There are just too many photographers everywhere, even though Lofoten offers countless far more interesting compositions. On top of that, I simply don’t enjoy shooting the aurora borealis in a village or, even worse, in a town. But during our Lofoten photo expedition in October 2024, we had no other choice. The wind was so strong that shooting anywhere without some sort of shelter was out of the question. So, we picked one of the lowest spots in Reine, surrounded by hills, houses, and other structures, just to escape the wind.

Thanks to that, we were able to enjoy a calm and peaceful shoot. The composition might not be the strongest, but it was still better than nothing. And why did I even bother stitching this image together? To have an example for future workshop participants—showing them what we’ll be shooting when Norway greets us with relentless winds :)

Panorama compiled from a total of 20 frames (3-level exposure bracketing of 5 frames in a single row, 5 frames in the second row).
